Omega-3 Research

Relationship to Heart Health

Proven Benefits

Research has shown a relationship between long-chain omega-3 fatty acid (EPA and DHA) intake and heart health. In fact, global health organizations recognize this relationship. For example, based on this research, the World Health Organization (WHO) has determined that there is “convincing” evidence showing a relationship between intake of fish and fish oils and heart health. Similarly, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the use of a “qualified health claim” on conventional foods and dietary supplements containing EPA or DHA. FDA concluded that there is “supportive but not conclusive” evidence that consumption of EPA and DHA “may reduce the risk” of cardiovascular disease.

The research that has been conducted on omega-3 fatty acids has shown that EPA helps promote heart health. Similar to EPA, SDA is an omega-3 fatty acid. SDA converts to EPA naturally in the body. Consuming SDA helps maintain heart health.
